Purdue University and the Purdue for Life Foundation created Purdue Day of Service in 2021 to encourage alumni and friends of the university to embrace volunteerism. This event aligns with Purdue’s 1869 Tree Planting Master Plan, which calls for planting 3,738 trees by fiscal year 2025, and the Sustainability Master Plan. The total number of trees to be planted was determined by doubling 1,869, which is the year Purdue was founded.
With the carefully developed tree plan, Purdue is on a path to establish a more connected campus through the strategic planting of more native, urban, and specialty trees. The plan increases the resiliency of the existing urban tree canopy and strengthens and diversifies the campus tree collection, which serves as an outdoor learning environment for current and future students.
Purdue Day of Service also reinforces Purdue’s standing as an Arbor Day Foundation Tree Campus Higher Education institution, a status the university has held since 2009.
We planted a whopping 325 trees last year, bringing our total number of trees planted across campus to nearly 400. This year, we’re branching out—now you can lend a hand without lifting a shovel!
