Engineers Without Borders Purdue is a student led organization dedicated to improving the world through engineering projects. We partner with multiple communities to carry out projects in collaboration that meet their needs.
We are fundraising to develop a sustainable water sanitation, transportation, and storage system for a community in rural Rwanda. This past summer, we traveled and built our first phase of the project, which included a pipeline, chlorination system, and a mortar storage tank. This summer, we intend to finish the pipeline route and build a second, larger tank and three tap stands so the cleaned water can be accessed.
Can we please count on your support as we work to bring clean water to this community?
WHY DO WE NEED YOUR SUPPORT?
So far, we have gone on two trips: an assessment trip to gather data and an implementation trip to start the building process. We hope to send six more students this July on a third trip to finish the project, but we need your help. All donations received will specifically contribute to the materials needed to construct the pipeline, tap stands, and large reservoir tank.
The residents of our partner community, Rubona, Rwanda, lack consistent and safe access to clean water. Lack of access to clean water is one of the key markers for cyclic poverty around the globe. Rubona does have the Yanze river run through the town, but it is extremely polluted. Many residents rely on it regardless as it’s their only option, leading to high rates of waterborne disease and mortality. The only alternative to the river that residents have is a spring that’s a 30-minute hike up a mountain. Many families send children up the mountain to collect water each day, which is tough physical work and leads to less time spent in school.
We need to fundraise the remaining costs of the system to ensure the project is a success. The team members who have already traveled to Rwanda in past summers will be the first to tell you that the people of Rubona are extremely grateful for this project. We all realize the extreme impact that it will have on the health and livelihoods of their community.
In addition, the project has a great impact on Purdue students as it allows us to grow as leaders and make many personal and professional developments. Join us in our mission today by making a gift now!
