Boilermakers Bound for D.C. Inauguration Research Trip

"To conduct research on this trip would be an amazing once in a lifetime opportunity. I am deeply fascinated by politics and plan to go into the government sector after graduating from college."                    Melissa, Political Science and Russian, BA 2019

OUR PROJECT

Our team of 19 students from the Department of Political Science, the Brian Lamb School of Communication and Pi Sigma Alpha will embark on a four-day research project in Washington, D.C.  Dr. Nadia Brown and Dr. Natasha Duncan (MA 2006, PhD 2010, Political Science, College of Liberal Arts) from the Department of Political Science will lead the trip and educate the students on the research process.  As a group, we are conducting research on the political process and how the public mobilizes to express their political opinions in the wake of a contentious national election.

Students will experience the excitement surrounding D.C. during inauguration as well as meet with colleagues from other universities and have a behind the scenes tour of C-SPAN.  After the trip, students will present their research findings at a public forum at Purdue.  .

"As a graduating senior, I believe my communication courses have given me the tools and knowledge to work in the field.  This experience would take me outside of Purdue to develop research skills in a new setting that will benefit me as I begin a career in market research."                                                           Megan, Public Relations and Strategic Communication, BA 2017

OUR NEED

We were overwhelmed with student interest for this research opportunity. In order to support the demand, the allocated funds have been stretched.  Any donation will greatly assist in the overall student experience as it is premium pricing in Washington with the Inauguration and Women’s March on Washington.

"My goal is to continue my study of political science in a graduate program and receive a Master's degree; therefore, independent and collaborative research will be a critical part of my future academic career."   Catherine, Political Science, BA 2018

ABOUT US

“As a freshman, I am eager to learn more about how politics affect and impact communities. The Inauguration Research Trip is an opportunity to acquire information firsthand for my future studies.”   Pablo, Political Science and Sociology, BA 2020

Purdue’s College of Liberals Arts develops students to think critically and creatively to improve society.  Real-life, hands-on experiences provide rich context for fueling the fire to lead boldly in a dynamic world.  The 2017 Presidential Inauguration Research Trip will provide students with an amazing opportunity to study democracy in action.
