To everyone who supported this campaign,
Thank you for your gift to support the Science Alumni Undergraduate Research Fellowship Endowment! Your heartfelt generosity will help fund valuable research opportunities for countless Purdue Science students.
Undergraduate research plays a crucial role in the growth and success of our students. Because of you, more students will be afforded opportunities to conduct research alongside talented and award-winning faculty members. These experiences will transform lives and move our world forward!
Thank you for being ever true to Purdue College of Science!
Sincerely,
Larry Myers
President, College of Science Alumni Board
Senior Earth, Atmospheric, and Planetary Sciences student, Caleb Engle, is working alongside Professor Briony Horgan for his research project that focuses on the mineralogy of Mars. Caleb and Professor Horgan use images taken from satellites and rovers around Mars and process the images through a computer program called ENVI. After analyzing the mineralogy of different locations on Mars, they can conclude what the environment was like when specific minerals were formed. Undergraduate research leads to deeper learning, enhanced relationship-building with faculty, increased chances of attending graduate school, and much more! Help students like Caleb fund critical research projects by donating today!
Every two years, Purdue administers the Student Experience in the Research University (SERU) survey to its undergraduate students. SERU seeks students' thoughts on topics related to student engagement, personal development, campus climate, and satisfaction with the campus. Survey results shed some light on research opportunities for undergraduate students at Purdue -
When compared to 9 other AAU participating universities, Purdue undergraduate students are significantly more likely to report that they "have worked with a faculty member on an activity other than coursework." Although higher than peer institutions, the rate of students at Purdue to agree with this statement is only 14.8%. This suggests that there is room for improvement in terms of creating opportunities for students to engage in research with faculty.
Help us fund research opportunities for undergraduate science students. Every gift, no matter the amount, will make an impact. Show your support today!
Undergraduate science students at Purdue have the opportunity to work along side talented and award-winning professors. These summer or semester-long research projects allow students to conduct groundbreaking research. These experiences are invaluable! Learn about research projects that undergraduate science students are working on today: Junior Biological Sciences student, Nicole Biddinger, is currently participating in Dr. Angeline Lyon's lab. Dr. Lyon's research focuses on cardiovascular disease, the number one leading cause of death in the United States. The objective of her research is to use a variety of biochemical assays to elucidate the mechanisms of regulation of phospholipase C enzymes, which are activated by hormones and are vital for normal cardiovascular function.
